This series of sessions will take a deep dive into a system-wide approach to landlord engagement and unit acquisition—and will provide detailed examples of how best engage and support landlords and housing program participants.

About our session:
This series of sessions will take a deep dive into a system-wide approach to landlord engagement and unit acquisition—and will provide detailed examples of how best engage and support landlords and housing program participants. You will complete this series with the necessary tools to implement a systemic approach to working with landlords in your community and increasing your community housing stock.
Each session will include a brief, targeted lesson followed by interactive exercises and peer discussions exploring how to apply these lessons on the ground in your community.
There are two tracks to these sessions:
- Leadership Track: aimed at people in your community who are making strategic decisions about implementing a system-wide landlord engagement and unit acquisition approach.
- Direct Service Staff Track: aimed at the people in your community who are working directly with people experiencing homelessness to assist them in accessing housing as well as their supervisors and/or program managers.
Please invite your community partners to participate in this series of sessions including CoC leads, CES leads, PHAs, Housing Navigators, Housing Advocates, Case Managers, Housing Locators, program managers and supervisors.
LEADERSHIP & DIRECT SERVICE STAFF SESSION

Description: This session will provide a short overview of a system-wide landlord engagement and unit acquisition, as well as a review of the many affordable housing types that may be found in your area. This is a self-paced video.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the three elements of an effective housing location system.
- Support the ongoing development of a landlord engagement strategy across the community.
- Identify the types of affordable housing currently in your community.
Session #1:
Building Landlord Relationships:
Creating Connections and Access To Housing
Date: 5/20/22
Time: 10:00 AM to 12: 30 PM PST.
Description: How do we make “the pitch” and help landlords to understand the financial benefits of working with our housing programs? This session will focus on how to approach landlords effectively—and will review of best practices in landlord incentives.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify three to five different strategies to engage landlords in your community.
- Present your personal “pitch” to convince a landlord to house your participant.

Landlords as your Secondary Client:
Maintaining Relationships
Date: 6/03/22
Time: 10:00 AM to 12: 30 PM PST.
Description: The key to increasing access to housing hinges on developing a strong, supportive partnerships with landlords.. This session will focus on how to effectively align tenant supports with landlord supports to meet your program objectives.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Effectively present and implement landlord retention strategies.
- Effectively present and leverage important tenant supports.
Session #3:
Preparing and Connecting Participants to Housing:
Developing a Strength's Based Housing Plan
Date: 6/17/22
Time: 10:00 AM to 12: 30 PM PST.
Description: An effective asset-based housing plan expands housing access for new tenants while providing landlords with the information and support they need. This session will focus on how to create and conduct a housing assessment that identifies and highlights participants’ strengths for prospective landlords while reducing tenant screening barriers.
This session will focus on how to do a participant assessment that provides information that landlords will want to address. Participants’ strengths, Tenant Screening Barriers, and preparing a strength’s based housing plan are all a part of this session.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify three to five ways to address tenant screening barriers.
- Complete a tenant screening report.
- Complete a strength-based housing plan.
